This is a workshop aimed at wildlife managers that will help you meet the needs of your job. Whether you are managing public land, helping private landowners meet their management goals, or just find yourself in conversations with the public about deer, this workshop is for you. The workshop will begin by covering deer management in Missouri from a statewide perspective; history of deer management in Missouri, population dynamics and regulations, public land population management, and some other statewide examples.
The Management Goals and Harvest Strategies portion of the workshop will focus on: traditional, quality, and trophy deer management approaches; how to develop goals, harvest strategies, and practical population estimation techniques; antler development and genetics; and hunting pressure and deer behavior. After a break for lunch (on your own), we will dive into how to use deer management as a tool to promote management for all habitat types and wildlife species.
You will hear real life case studies from a private land manager and MDC private land conservationists. We will discuss Deer Nutrition and Food Sources as well as Native Community Management. Partnerships and cooperatives, their importance and how to use them will also be discussed. An urban biologist will be on hand to discuss the challenges associated with deer management in urban areas and how to apply the lessons learned by others. The workshop will conclude with a discussion of Deer Management Information available to you (and deer hunters), and how to sort the good from the bad, followed by a Q&A session.
